Loss of appetite and refusal to eat

When animals eat poorly or refuse to eat altogether, there are often health reasons. Ultimately, all illnesses in which the general health is very poor lead to loss of appetite. These include acute, feverish processes as well as many chronic illnesses. Eating is often stopped, especially if you have digestive disorders. But even if you have kidney, heart, liver or other illnesses, you may lose your appetite. If there are dental problems or inflammation in the mouth area, feeding may be too painful and therefore reduced.
However, an animal that refuses food does not necessarily have to be sick - many animals are simply picky and "insist" on their favorite food by categorically rejecting everything else.

Possible consequences of refusing food

If an animal does not eat enough, this leads to a lack of energy. The metabolism adapts to this situation by obtaining energy from the body's own reserves. For this purpose, the body's own protein is first used, which results in muscle breakdown.
In sick and convalescent animals, the organism is further weakened by this deficiency. Malnutrition is of particular importance in chronic kidney diseases, as the kidneys are further damaged by the increased production of protein breakdown products.

Hepatic lipidosis

This particular clinical picture can occur in cats if they do not eat for several days. In order to supply the body with energy, fat reserves are mobilized. The cat's liver is literally flooded with the fats released from the fatty tissue and fatty liver disease occurs (hepatic lipidosis). Overweight animals that suddenly stop eating are particularly at risk. If hepatic lipidosis is not recognized in time, it develops into a life-threatening disease. Regular food intake is therefore even more important for cats than for dogs.

Don't ignore your fluid intake!

When animals feel bad and don't eat or eat poorly, they often don't take in enough fluids because they no longer want to drink. When feeding wet, the liquid content of the food is missing. The reduced fluid intake is sometimes not even noticeable in cats because they hardly drink less than before.
The consequences are dehydration (drying out) and electrolyte deficiency and even circulatory collapse. While dogs and cats can normally survive for a long time without solid food, adequate fluid intake is essential, otherwise the organism will collapse in a few days. Lack of fluids should therefore be avoided at all costs.
Since animals with kidney disease lose more fluid through their kidneys, they should consume a lot of fluid.

The solution to food refusal

Basically, for cats and dogs that are not eating or are eating very poorly, it is initially important to ensure adequate fluid and nutrient intake. ReConvales® Tonicum and ReConvales® Energy can make a significant contribution to this.
To encourage animals that eat poorly to eat, particularly tasty liquids such as ReConvales® Tonicum or ReConvales® Energy are suitable. Cats and dogs with poor appetite are more likely to be persuaded to eat if the food is liquid. The liquid can be mixed into regular food to make it more attractive, offered plain in a bowl, or given carefully with a plastic syringe.
In the long term, you should always try to get the animal to eat normal food again. For animals that receive wet food, this can be done step by step by mixing ReConvales® Tonicum or ReConvales® Energy with the food and making a more or less thin porridge as desired.
You can do a similar thing with dry food if you let it soak in ReConvales® Tonicum or ReConvales® Energy. Another way to get animals who refuse their dry food back to their taste is to first put ReConvales® Tonicum in a clean bowl and then pour in the dry food. When trying to get the delicious liquid, the animals usually take some of the dry food with them and are thus encouraged to eat.
