Flea control

Fleas nest in the area

Only a small portion of the flea population (about 5%) consists of adult, blood-sucking fleas. The remaining 95% of the flea population is made up of eggs, larvae and pupae and is usually invisible to the owner because they live in niches in the environment.
Because the fleas and their development stages are not strictly dependent on their host; if they fall off, they can also survive in the environment for a long time, preferring dark, hard-to-reach places of refuge.

Treat the environment too

If your animal has fleas, it is often not enough to simply remove the host using a spot on or tablet, as this treatment is only aimed at the adult blood-sucking fleas that are currently on the animal. Breaking the flea cycle and eliminating the entire flea population (eggs, larvae and pupae) requires consistent cleaning and treatment of the environment.

The EktoDerm® Fogger and/or the EktoDerm® environmental spray can be used for environmental treatment.
The fogger is simply set up in the room to be treated, activated by pressing a tab and then independently sprays a fine mist, so that the active ingredients are evenly distributed on all accessible surfaces.
The ambient spray, on the other hand, is sprayed by the user, which allows specific areas to be treated.

Don't forget hidden corners

Flea eggs are increasingly dropped from animals where the animal sleeps and often spends time, but also in places where animals jump up or down (e.g. stairs, beds, sofas, windowsills) or shake themselves frequently (e.g . when putting on/taking off the collar). The flea larvae hatched from the eggs are quite mobile and avoid light, which is why larvae and pupae are often found in cracks, niches and corners and are therefore difficult to reach.
In addition to using the EktoDerm® Fogger, it makes sense to also use the EktoDerm® ambient spray for hard-to-reach places (e.g. under the sofa, in the wardrobe, in the car). In the case of stubborn flea infestations, only a combination of treating the animals and treating the environment with a fogger and spray is usually successful.
Since the ingredients are effective insecticides and treating flea infestations is often problematic, caution and care should be exercised when using the products. The questions that frequently arise in this context will be answered below.

Flea eggs increasingly fall from animals in places where they often sleep or rest, as well as in places where they jump up or down or shake themselves.
The larvae that then hatch from the flea eggs like to retreat to undisturbed, darker areas that offer sufficient food. These places must definitely be treated when fighting fleas.
Potential refuges for flea larvae are marked on the sketch, which should be taken into account when combating them.

Ingredients

EktoDerm® Fogger and environmental spray contain the insecticides permethrin and tetramethrin, which quickly and reliably kill all flea stages. They are also effective against other pests such as ticks, flies and cockroaches.
Piperonyl butoxide enhances these properties by inhibiting the breakdown of the active ingredients by the flea organism, thereby extending the time of action and increasing the effect.
The growth inhibitor pyriproxifen also prevents the development of flea eggs and flea larvae, causes infertility in female fleas, and shortens the lifespan of adult fleas.

Frequently asked Questions

  • Treat all pets with an appropriate flea treatment (available from your veterinarian) before treating the environment
  • Thoroughly clean or dispose of the pet's favorite places (blankets, pillows, etc.), wash washable items at at least 60 °C
  • Collect and clean toys (at least 60 °C)
  • Carefully vacuum floors, carpets, upholstered furniture and cushions
  • It is best to clean tiles, parquet or laminate with a steam cleaner
  • Pay particular attention to cracks, corners, favorite places and areas under furniture (sofa, armchair, bed, etc.).

  • Remove all food and feed
  • Remove eating utensils and cutlery
  • Remove children's toys
  • Remove all pets and pet birds
  • Aquariums/terrariums: Turn off the ventilation and, if necessary, cover it or remove it from the room completely, because the active ingredients of the EktoDerm® Fogger and EktoDerm® environmental spray are highly toxic to fish, insects and reptiles

  • Do not use directly on people or animals
  • Do not use by sensitive people, such as: B. Asthmatics, allergy sufferers, people with chemical hypersensitivity or children
  • Do not inhale spray mist
  • Do not use in poorly ventilated rooms
  • Close windows and doors during use
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after use
  • The room must not be entered for 2 hours after application
  • Ventilate well for at least 1 hour before using again and allowing access to children, animals or sensitive people
  • Do not vacuum or wipe 24 hours after application

  • The contents of the Ektoderm® Fogger should be sufficient for the size of the apartment/room and be adapted to this (150 ml for up to 60 m2, 75 ml for 25 - 30 m2). If necessary, several foggers must be used
  • Choose a central location (e.g. in the middle of a single room/in the open door between the rooms if there are two rooms)
  • The location of the fogger should be elevated (e.g. table, chair)
  • Cover the location with a newspaper
  • Place the fogger on the newspaper
  • Press down the plastic tab until it clicks into place
  • Leave the room immediately for 2 hours
  • Repeat application after at least 6 months

  • Shake before use
  • Spray pets' places from a distance of approx. 50 cm
  • Lightly spray carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture and curtains (especially at floor level).
  • Treat behind open doors and under furniture (such as beds, sofas, cupboards or chests of drawers) with the EktoDerm® environmental spray in addition to the Ektoderm® Fogger, as the contamination with flea eggs, larvae and pupae may be high there
  • Repeat application after 4 weeks at the earliest

  • Resistance to the active ingredients is rare, but cannot be ruled out.
  • However, it is more common for fleas to still be in places that are not moistened with the active ingredient. Such “flea reservoirs” can be found, for example: B. in cracks and corners, under beds, behind ledges, in or under cupboards, under the floorboards or in an unwashed dog blanket. Particularly in the case of massive flea infestations, numerous fleas can “appear” again in a very short space of time.
  • If the contents of the Ektoderm® Fogger are not sufficient for the entire area required in the apartment, the entire flea population will not be killed.
  • Please remember that humans are also used as carriers of fleas, e.g. For example, a flea population can develop in the car even though the animal has never been in it.
  • In the case of massive flea infestations and in problematic cases, it may sometimes be necessary to call in a specialist (exterminator) who can assess the situation on site and take appropriate measures.
